In a significant move to streamline crowd management and enhance devotee experience, the Odisha government has reaffirmed its commitment to introduce a structured queue darshan system at the 12th-century Srimandir in Puri.

Addressing recent discussions surrounding crowd control, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan clarified the government’s stance on a proposal put forward by the Pratihari Nijog. The Nijog had suggested utilising “man-made” or rope barricades instead of a rigid queue system. However, the Minister dismissed this approach, stating that rope barricades are impractical and insufficient for managing heavy devotee influx during peak times.

Ramps Ready and Consensus Building Underway

To replace temporary measures with a permanent, organised solution, temple authorities have already prepared specially designed ramps according to blueprint specifications. The first pilot model of the queue system has been showcased to representatives of the Pratihari Nijog, and similar consultations are ongoing with other Nijogs to build mutual consensus.

Once approved by the temple managing committee, the queue darshan system will be rolled out on a trial basis.

How the New System Will Work

Under the proposed layout, devotees will enter through the Satapahacha gate, walk up the ramp erected in the Natamandap to have darshan of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath), and exit through the Ghanti Dwara or other designated gates. To ensure inclusivity and safety, special dedicated queues will be established for women, children, senior citizens, and differently-abled devotees.

With preparations and trial discussions underway for over a year, stakeholders and devotees alike are hopeful that the new system will significantly reduce congestion, eliminate chaos during festive seasons, and make the divine experience at Srimandir safer and more comfortable for everyone.
