A SpiceJet aircraft struck a stationary Akasa Air plane while taxiing at Delhi airport on Thursday, damaging both jets and triggering an official investigation.
The incident involved a SpiceJet B737-700 and an Akasa Air aircraft scheduled to operate flight QP 1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad.
SpiceJet confirmed that its aircraft sustained damage to the right winglet, while Akasa Air reported damage to the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of its plane. Following the collision, the SpiceJet aircraft was grounded. Akasa Air said its aircraft was stationary at the time of the incident and had to return to the bay.
“All passengers and crew were safely disembarked, and our ground teams are making alternative arrangements to fly our passengers to Hyderabad at the earliest,” an Akasa spokesperson stated. The airline emphasised that passenger safety remains its highest priority.
SpiceJet also issued a statement acknowledging the ground occurrence and confirmed that relevant authorities had been informed. Both airlines assured cooperation with the investigation.
Authorities are now examining ground movement procedures at Delhi airport to determine how the incident occurred. The probe will focus on operational safety and coordination between airlines during taxiing.
