The Sunrisers Hyderabad are grappling with a growing injury crisis in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season.
The franchise has confirmed that English pacer David Payne will miss the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle injury, further weakening an already strained squad.
This latest setback adds to a series of injuries that have disrupted the team’s balance and momentum early in the competition.
Multiple Injuries Disrupt Team Combination
The Hyderabad-based side has been dealing with continuous player unavailability. Captain Pat Cummins has yet to feature this season due to fitness concerns, forcing Ishan Kishan to step in as a temporary leader.
Earlier, English pacer Brydon Carse was ruled out after sustaining a hand injury during training sessions. He was replaced by Sri Lankan bowler Dilshan Madushanka.
Interestingly, Payne himself was brought in as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who had withdrawn due to a foot injury—highlighting the team’s ongoing struggle with player fitness.
David Payne’s Short-Lived Impact
Payne featured in two matches this season. He showed promise against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, picking up key wickets including Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma in consecutive deliveries. However, he conceded runs heavily in both outings.
In the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, Payne struggled, giving away 35 runs in just two overs without taking a wicket. Despite his efforts, consistency remained a concern.
Hope on the Horizon: Pat Cummins Nears Return
Amid the setbacks, there is some positive news for SRH. Pat Cummins has reportedly received medical clearance after recovering from a back issue. Recent scans have confirmed that the stress injury has healed, allowing him to resume bowling without restrictions.
The Australian star is expected to rejoin the squad soon and could make his return against Rajasthan Royals on April 25, which may provide a much-needed boost to the team.
What Lies Ahead for SRH?
With injuries piling up, SRH’s campaign faces a critical phase. The team management is likely to consider announcing another replacement to stabilise the bowling unit.
Their upcoming fixtures, including a key match against Chennai Super Kings, will test the squad’s depth and resilience as they aim to stay competitive in the tournament.
