South Africa vs India T20 World Cup 2026

In a high-stakes Super 8 encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium, South Africa delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat co-hosts India by 76 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The emphatic win not only snapped India’s 12-match unbeaten streak in T20 World Cups but also strengthened the Proteas’ position in Group 1 while dealing a significant blow to India’s semi-final aspirations.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa recovered impressively from an early stumble to post a challenging 187/7 in their 20 overs. David Miller once again proved his big-match temperament, smashing an unbeaten 63 off just 35 balls to anchor the innings. Tristan Stubbs provided explosive support with a quickfire 44 off 24 deliveries, helping the Proteas rebuild after slipping to 20/3 early on.

India’s bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah (3 wickets), fought back to restrict the total, but the damage was limited as Miller and Stubbs accelerated in the death overs.

In reply, India’s chase never truly ignited. The batting lineup collapsed under relentless pressure from South Africa’s disciplined attack, crumbling to 111 all out in 18.5 overs. Shivam Dube top-scored with a fighting 42 off 37 balls, while contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (18) and Hardik Pandya (18) were too little, too late.

Marco Jansen starred with the ball, claiming 4/22 in a devastating spell that ripped through the middle order. Keshav Maharaj chipped in with 3/24, and Corbin Bosch added 2/12 as the Proteas bowlers exploited the slower surface effectively.

The result marks South Africa’s first victory over India in Ahmedabad and ends the hosts’ impressive run in the tournament. With this win, the Proteas have boosted their net run rate and semi-final prospects, especially following earlier results in the group.

David Miller was deservedly named Player of the Match for his match-defining knock. “It’s always special to perform in big games,” Miller said post-match. “The bowlers set it up beautifully, and we just had to finish strong.”

The defeat will prompt questions for India, particularly around their top-order fragility and inability to handle pressure in crucial phases. As the Super 8 stage intensifies, both teams now turn their focus to upcoming fixtures that could decide qualification for the semi-finals.

South Africa’s clinical display serves as a reminder of their growing prowess in ICC events, while India will need a strong bounce-back to keep their title defence alive.
