Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India as BRICS chair in 2026.
He was received at the airport by Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur.
The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the Iranian leader, noting on X: “India and Iran share civilizational ties, marked by robust cultural and people‑to‑people bonds. As BRICS partners, the two countries are working to contribute to shared progress and prosperity.”
The summit, scheduled for September 12–13, brings together leaders of BRICS member nations, partner countries, and outreach invitees. BRICS now comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei earlier stressed that Tehran would use the summit to deepen discussions with India, particularly on trade, economic cooperation, and the Chabahar Port project.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that the summit would witness “positive and meaningful discussions on various issues with the welfare of the world in mind.”
Last month, Modi and Pezeshkian met on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, reiterating their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
