A tragic accident in Odisha’s Kalahandi district claimed six lives on Tuesday after workers allegedly suffocated inside an under-construction septic tank at Gaud Karlakhunta village under the Madanpur Rampur area.

The heartbreaking incident occurred while workers were removing centring materials from the newly constructed tank. Another worker sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Workers Collapse Inside Under-Construction Tank

According to local sources, the mishap took place when a group of workers entered the septic tank to remove the centring structure used during construction. Shortly after entering, they reportedly became unconscious due to suspected toxic gas exposure and lack of oxygen inside the enclosed space.

In a desperate attempt to save them, others entered the tank one after another. However, they too collapsed after inhaling the hazardous fumes, turning the rescue attempt into a devastating tragedy.

The deceased reportedly include three masons, one labourer, the owner of the house, and his son. Authorities stated that the identities of the victims were yet to be officially confirmed at the time of reporting.

Rescue Operation Launched by Locals and Administration

After receiving information about the incident, local residents and administrative officials rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. All the victims were pulled out from the septic tank and immediately taken to the Madanpur Rampur Community Health Centre.

Doctors at the hospital declared six persons dead on arrival, while another injured worker was admitted in critical condition.

The incident has triggered shock and grief across the village, with residents mourning the sudden loss of lives.

Police Begin Investigation

Police personnel from Madanpur Rampur reached the site soon after the incident and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

Preliminary reports indicate that the deaths were caused by asphyxiation due to toxic gases accumulated inside the septic tank. Officials are also likely to examine whether proper safety measures and protective equipment were provided to the workers before they entered the confined space.

Concerns Over Worker Safety Rise Again

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with confined-space work and the lack of safety protocols at construction sites in rural areas.

Experts often warn that septic tanks and underground chambers can contain poisonous gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, making entry extremely dangerous without proper ventilation and safety gear.

Authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries into possible negligence and compliance with workplace safety norms.
