Odisha is reeling under one of its harshest winter spells in recent years as a severe cold wave continues to grip the state, disrupting daily life across multiple regions. Several cities have reported unusually low temperatures, highlighting the intensity of the prevailing weather conditions.
Rourkela recorded a chilling 3.6 degrees Celsius, making it the fourth coldest city in India. Meanwhile, Cuttack witnessed its coldest day in over two decades, with the mercury plunging to 8.9 degrees Celsius, breaking a 21-year-old record. The previous lowest temperature in the city—8.5 degrees Celsius—was recorded on January 6, 2004.
The Twin Cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack continue to experience biting cold, with dense fog persisting during early morning hours and worsening the chill. On Saturday, Bhubaneswar recorded a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius around 5:30 am, while the minimum temperature stood at 10.2 degrees Celsius.
The cold wave has had an even more severe impact in northern Odisha, where Mayurbhanj district reported sub-zero temperatures, underscoring the extreme nature of the ongoing weather pattern.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is no immediate respite from the cold. The cold wave conditions are expected to persist, with low temperatures likely to continue until January 11.
As the prolonged spell of cold weather continues, residents across Odisha are taking precautionary measures to cope with the unforgiving winter conditions.
