Odisha is experiencing an intense cold wave as Bhubaneswar recorded its lowest night temperature in 22 years, with the mercury dropping to 9.2 degrees Celsius. The sudden dip has brought harsh winter conditions, affecting daily life across the state.

According to weather data, Jharsuguda emerged as the coldest place in Odisha, registering a minimum temperature of 6.2 degrees Celsius early Saturday morning. Several interior and coastal districts also witnessed unusually low temperatures, highlighting the widespread impact of the cold wave.

Other parts of the state reported similarly chilly conditions. Keonjhar recorded 9°C, while Bhubaneswar later stabilized at 10.2°C. Temperatures in Balasore stood at 11.6°C, Chandbali at 12°C, and Paradip at 12.4°C.

Southern coastal areas were not spared. Gopalpur recorded a minimum temperature of 14.2°C, while the holy city of Puri experienced a low of 15°C, making it one of the coldest nights of the season for the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the cold conditions are likely to persist for the next two weeks, driven by dry and cold northerly winds. The weather agency has also warned that severe cold wave conditions may continue until January 11.

In response, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Cuttack, Khordha, and Angul, advising people to remain cautious.

Residents, especially children, senior citizens, outdoor workers, and those with health conditions, are advised to take adequate precautions during late night and early morning hours as the cold spell continues across Odisha.
