Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Indian women’s cricket team in Delhi following their World Cup victory, offering heartfelt praise and a touch of humor as he took a dig at online critics who had previously doubted the team’s potential.

“Troll sena aapke peeche lag gayi thi — you all were trolled mercilessly,” PM Modi remarked with a smile, referring to those who mocked the team after their early tournament losses.

PM Modi’s Message to Team India

PM Modi’s encouraging words came after the team’s remarkable comeback in the World Cup. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, which faced early setbacks with three consecutive losses, went on to clinch the title — silencing critics and inspiring fans across India.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister praised the players for their resilience, discipline, and determination, highlighting their journey as a lesson in perseverance.

Players Recall Emotional Moments

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur reflected on the team’s earlier meeting with the Prime Minister after the 2017 World Cup, saying:

“Back then, we came empty-handed. This time, we wanted to make India proud — and we did.”

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana shared that PM Modi’s words of encouragement had deeply motivated the team, reminding them of the power of self-belief even in tough moments.

Deepti Sharma, the Player of the Tournament, said she had eagerly awaited this meeting since 2017. She revealed that her faith and spiritual strength helped her through challenging matches. When PM Modi noticed her “Jai Shri Ram” Instagram bio and Lord Hanuman tattoo, Deepti said these symbols gave her inner courage.

A Light-Hearted and Inspiring Interaction

The Prime Minister engaged warmly with each player, recalling memorable on-field moments:

  • He mentioned Harleen Deol’s stunning catch against England in 2021, which he had shared on social media.

  • He teased Harmanpreet about keeping the final match ball for good luck.

  • He joked about Amanjot Kaur’s juggling catch in the final, saying she caught the ball — and then focused on the trophy.

Player Kranti Gaud mentioned that her brother is a big admirer of the Prime Minister, prompting Modi to extend an open invitation for a meeting.

When Harmanpreet asked how he remains calm and focused amid constant challenges, PM Modi replied,

“Staying present-minded has become a habit over time.”

Celebrating Women’s Cricket and Sportsmanship

The event was filled with laughter, inspiration, and gratitude. PM Modi emphasized that Team India’s victory symbolizes the rise of women in Indian sports, and urged them to continue inspiring young athletes across the nation.

He concluded by saying that their success not only belongs to cricket fans but to every Indian who believes in hard work and resilience.
