Schools across Mayurbhanj district will remain closed on Thursday, August 13, 2026, following heavy rainfall in the district.
The Mayurbhanj district administration has directed all Block Education Officers (BEOs) to ensure the closure of schools as a precautionary measure and to protect students amid continuing rain.
The decision follows heavy rainfall reported overnight and continuing into Thursday. The administration has also asked school authorities to ensure that students and their parents or guardians are informed about the closure.
Schools closed from primary to higher secondary level
According to the official direction, the closure applies to government, government-aided and private schools from the primary level through higher secondary education.
All BEOs have been asked to instruct school heads under their respective jurisdictions to implement the order.
The administration said the precautionary measure was taken in view of the weather conditions and the need to ensure students’ safety.
Teachers must report to schools
Although classes have been suspended, headmasters, headmistresses, principals and teachers have been directed to attend their respective schools as usual.
School staff have been asked to communicate the holiday information to students and parents or guardians through available channels, including class WhatsApp groups, phone calls and SMS messages.
The measure is intended to prevent students from travelling to schools despite the closure order.
Heavy rain forecast amid low-pressure system
The school closure comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha over the next 24 hours.
Mayurbhanj is among the districts expected to experience significant rainfall as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal influences weather conditions over the state.
The weather system is likely to increase rainfall activity in several districts, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.
Residents are advised to follow official weather updates and local administration advisories, particularly during periods of intense rain and thunderstorms.
