Brazilian football star Neymar has expressed his condolences to Lionel Messi following the death of the Argentina captain’s father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68.
Jorge Messi died in Rosario on Saturday. He played a significant role in his son’s football journey from an early age and also served as his agent during Messi’s rise to global stardom.
Messi shared an emotional tribute to his father on social media on Wednesday, reflecting on their relationship, his father’s support throughout his career and the difficult period leading up to his death.
Responding to Messi’s post, Neymar sent a message of support to his former Barcelona teammate.
“Much strength for you and your family big hug,” Neymar wrote in the comments.
Cristiano Ronaldo also offers support
Neymar’s message came shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo also reached out to Messi following the death of his father.
Ronaldo commented on Messi’s post with a message of sympathy, writing: “A huge hug to you and yours in these tough times, Leo. Much strength.”
The messages from two of football’s biggest stars have drawn attention as they offered support to Messi during a deeply personal loss.
Messi remembers his father’s final wish
In his tribute, Messi recalled how Jorge encouraged him to play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite his worsening health.
Messi said his father had hoped to see him play in the tournament’s final and had continued to encourage him to participate.
The footballer also spoke about how difficult it was to accept that his father was no longer there and reflected on the moments they still hoped to share.
Jorge Messi was a key figure throughout his son’s career, supporting Messi from his childhood in Argentina through his transformation into one of football’s most celebrated players.
