Team India faced a setback ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati as captain Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a neck injury.
Gill sustained the injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and underwent medical examination at a hospital. Doctors kept him under observation before discharging him the next day.
Gill travelled to Guwahati on November 19, 2025, but medical staff confirmed he was not fit to play. He will now head to Mumbai for further assessment and treatment.
In Gill’s absence, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will lead India in the crucial second Test. Pant, known for his aggressive batting and sharp leadership skills, steps in as stand-in captain at a time when India aims to maintain momentum in the series.
Officials emphasised that Gill’s recovery remains the priority. His absence is a blow to India’s batting lineup, but Pant’s leadership offers stability. Team management expressed confidence in Pant’s ability to inspire the squad and deliver results against South Africa.
The Guwahati Test carries significant importance for India’s campaign. Pant’s appointment as captain marks a new chapter in his career, giving him an opportunity to showcase his leadership on the big stage. Fans eagerly await his debut as Test captain, hoping his dynamic approach will energise the team.
India’s selectors assured that Gill’s injury will be monitored closely and decisions regarding his return will depend on medical reports. Meanwhile, Pant’s captaincy sets the tone for India’s strategy in the second Test.
