With the sacred chariots set to roll for the annual Rath Yatra, Indian Railways has taken centre stage in ensuring smooth and dignified travel for millions of devotees heading to Shreekshetra Puri.
This year’s pilgrimage reflects not only spiritual fervour but also a remarkable demonstration of modern-day public service led by Bhartiya Rail.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that over 1,215 train services—comprising 850 regular and 365 special services—are operational this year, marking a fourfold increase since 2014. Powered by an AI-based real-time demand prediction system, these trains are connecting even the remotest tribal and aspirational districts of Odisha directly to the coastal town.
In its largest-ever facilitation drive, Indian Railways has geared up to serve nearly 20 lakh passengers, with a peak of 2 lakh pilgrims per day. From expanding Puri station with 10 platforms to setting up advanced sanitation systems and cooling stations, the emphasis is on inclusivity and comfort.
Puri station now features designated holding spaces for 25,000 visitors, while an estimated 2.5 lakh free meals will be distributed. The Railways have also deployed drones, facial recognition systems, and additional personnel to ensure safety.
Accessibility has been another cornerstone of this initiative, with dedicated arrangements for the elderly, differently-abled, and medically vulnerable individuals. Mobile medical units, ambulance support, and first-aid kiosks have been strategically placed across the route.
A unique contribution comes in the form of special screw jacks and a dedicated engineering team to assist with the movement and positioning of the colossal wooden chariots. This support exemplifies Indian Railways’ ethos of Seva Parmo Dharma—service above all.
As Vaishnaw noted, “Bhartiya Rail remains the lifeline not only of India but also of every devotee who views Rath Yatra as their soul’s calling.”
