Odisha is bracing for heavy rainfall after a Low Pressure Area formed over the North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood at 5:30 am on Thursday, under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather system is likely to trigger heavy rainfall at several places, particularly across North Odisha.
Red warning for Mayurbhanj
For Thursday, the IMD has issued a Red Warning for Mayurbhanj, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in the district.
An Orange Warning has also been issued for Baleshwar, Bhadrak and Kendujhar, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph are also very likely at one or two places in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.
Yellow warning for 13 districts
Under the Yellow Warning category, heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Khordha.
The weather conditions are being closely monitored as the newly formed low-pressure area continues to influence the region.
People in districts under the red and orange warnings have been advised to remain alert, particularly during thunderstorms, lightning and periods of intense rainfall.
