RailTel Corporation of India Ltd., a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Railways, has achieved a major milestone in its international expansion journey by receiving a prestigious overseas project from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India.

The assignment involves establishing a greenfield Data Centre for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, a crucial element of India’s support to the Digital Ethiopia Strategy.

The project will be completed within one year, followed by three years of comprehensive Operation & Maintenance (O&M) support.

Expressing gratitude, RailTel’s Chairman & Managing Director said: “RailTel sincerely thanks the Ministry of External Affairs for entrusting us with this prestigious international assignment. We remain fully committed to delivering this project with the highest standards of professionalism, quality, and reliability. This engagement further strengthens RailTel’s role as a global digital infrastructure partner aligned with India’s development cooperation objectives.”

RailTel’s Global Expansion Strategy

  • RailTel is positioning itself as a global leader in digital infrastructure, aligned with India’s vision of enabling digital transformation across emerging economies.
  • The company leverages its deep experience in large-scale ICT projects for the Government of India to participate in international competitive bids.
  • Recent examples include participation in the UID project in Sri Lanka and MEA-funded initiatives in Jamaica (electronic LED scoreboards at Sabina Park Stadium) and Trinidad & Tobago (Make-in-India laptops for school students).

Focus Areas

RailTel’s global offerings emphasise:

  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)
  • Sovereign Cloud and Data Centres
  • AI-enabled solutions in healthcare and education
  • Rural and remote broadband connectivity
  • Secure government ICT platforms

The company is also exploring strategic partnerships with global OEMs to promote technology transfer, support Make-in-India manufacturing, and localise advanced digital technologies. In parallel, RailTel aims to contribute to capacity building through skill development, specialised training, and Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in partner countries.

RailTel is actively scouting opportunities across the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, South-East Asia, and Australia. Recently, it invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from global firms to collaborate on international projects.

With the Ethiopia Data Centre project, RailTel has firmly positioned itself as a credible global CPSE partner for delivering secure, scalable, and impactful digital infrastructure solutions. Its growing international portfolio reflects both its technical capability and India’s rising role as a provider of trusted digital public infrastructure for the Global South.
