The world-renowned Puri Rath Yatra, one of India’s most significant religious festivals, is set to be celebrated with grandeur and discipline in 2025.

To ensure its smooth execution, a high-level review meeting was held today under the chairmanship of Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Ahuja, at the Kharavela Bhawan conference hall in Bhubaneswar.

The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Satyabrata Sahu, Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania, Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary of Works, Food Supplies, Consumer Welfare, and Information & Public Relations Sanjay Kumar Singh, Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain, and Puri Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal. Senior officials from various state departments and police administrations were also present, contributing to the discussions.

Key Preparations for a Seamless Rath Yatra

Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple, provided updates on the ongoing preparations. He highlighted that the rituals preceding the Rath Yatra, including the sacred Nitis (Rituals) of Lord Jagannath, are being meticulously planned. The construction of the chariots is progressing, with the necessary timber already being sourced. Special attention is being given to crowd management to prevent congestion in front of the chariots during the procession.

Puri SP Vinit Agrawal presented a detailed plan for maintaining law and order during the festival. The administration discussed arrangements for VIP seating and facilities to ensure their comfort and safety. Chief Secretary Ahuja emphasised prioritising law and order, directing the police and relevant departments to work diligently to avoid any lapses, drawing on the success of previous years’ disciplined celebrations.

Infrastructure and Public Amenities

The meeting addressed critical infrastructure needs to support the millions of devotees expected to attend. Temporary camps for police personnel, equipped with borewells and support from WATCO, Puri, for drinking water, were planned. Sanitation arrangements, including the deployment of cleaning staff, were discussed to maintain hygiene across the city. Adequate drinking water facilities for devotees and the public will be provided through water tankers, with sanitation plans in place for various parts of Puri.

To prepare for potential rainfall, the Puri Municipality has identified 15 vulnerable areas prone to waterlogging. High-capacity diesel pumps will be stationed at key locations, including the Puri Hospital Square, to ensure efficient drainage. Mobile toilets and prefabricated fibre toilets will be installed across the city, and arrangements for lodging, electricity infrastructure checks, and VIP security were thoroughly reviewed.

Traffic and Crowd Management

Ensuring smooth traffic flow and crowd control was a focal point of the discussions. The administration plans to install CCTV cameras at strategic locations, implement robust crowd management measures, and designate parking zones for vehicles. A structured pass system and special arrangements for distinguished guests were also finalised to ensure a hassle-free experience during the chariot-pulling ceremony.

Chief Secy Ahuja directed all departments to work in close coordination, emphasising that no detail should be overlooked to ensure the festival’s success. The meeting underscored Odisha’s commitment to hosting a Rath Yatra that upholds its spiritual significance while ensuring safety and convenience for all attendees.

As preparations gain momentum, the state administration is leaving no stone unturned to make the Puri Rath Yatra 2025 a memorable and spiritually enriching event for devotees worldwide.
