After two days of continuous rain triggered by a low-pressure system, Odisha’s major rivers are showing a surprising turnaround. Water levels are falling steadily across the state, offering relief to residents who had braced for possible flooding.

According to the Water Resources Department, the drop is being felt from the upper reaches downward. As water recedes at the lower ends, levels in the upper stretches are also declining.

Mahanadi Basin: All Clear Below Danger Mark

In the Mahanadi system, floodwaters have been successfully managed. Key readings as of 6 pm on Monday:
– Khairmal: 103.2 metres (danger level 109 m)
– Tikarpada: 60.62 metres (below danger)
– Naraj: 24.05 metres (below danger)
– Nimapada: 3.72 metres (below danger)

All major points are now flowing safely under the danger threshold.

Brahmani Basin: Steady Decline Continues

The Brahmani river is also under control:
– Panposh: 174.26 metres (danger 178.42 m)
– Rengali: 84 metres (danger 88 m)
– Talcher: 57.37 metres (danger 62.91 m)
– Jenapur: 20.8 metres (danger 23 m)
– Indupur: 7.65 metres (danger 8.23 m)

Every gauging station is recording levels below the danger mark.

Baitarani Basin: Slow Drain at Lower End

The Baitarani presents a slightly different picture. While upper stretches are receding, the lower reaches are taking longer to drain.
– Champua: 373.92 metres (danger 376.41 m)
– Sompatna: 309.74 metres (danger 311.1 m)
– Anandapur: 37.7 metres (danger 38.36 m)

Because of the delayed outflow from Anandapur, water at Akhuapada is still flowing above the danger level. Officials, however, confirm that the level there has also started to fall.

“Water is receding from both the upper and lower stretches of the Baitarani. We expect a further drop over the next 24 hours,” the Water Resources Department stated.

The overall trend points to easing flood pressure across Odisha. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, especially in the Baitarani basin, but the latest data offers a clear signal of relief for communities living along these rivers.
