A 23‑year‑old woman from Punjab, Damanpreet Kaur, was strangled to death at her home in Edmonton, Canada.
Police have arrested her live‑in partner, 22‑year‑old Ritish Kumar, and charged him with second‑degree murder.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers responded on July 9 to reports of an unresponsive woman in the Silverberry neighbourhood. Kaur was rushed to hospital with life‑threatening injuries but succumbed on July 12. An autopsy confirmed death by strangulation, ruling it a homicide.
Investigators said the case is being treated as an intimate partner homicide, with no other suspects sought. Kaur, originally from Samrala in Ludhiana district, had moved to Canada five years ago on a student visa. Her family had taken a loan to support her education abroad.
A GoFundMe campaign launched to repatriate her body has raised over $18,000, nearing its $20,000 goal. The incident has sparked grief both in Canada and India, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by young students abroad.
