Punjab Kings produced a clinical and fearless batting display to chase down 196 with seven wickets in hand, handing Mumbai Indians a stunning defeat in a high-scoring IPL encounter at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
Mumbai Indians posted a challenging 195 for 6, largely thanks to a magnificent unbeaten 112 off just 60 balls from Quinton de Kock. The South African wicket-keeper batter smashed seven sixes and eight fours at a blistering strike rate of nearly 187, rescuing his side after they slumped to 12 for 2 early on.
De Kock found excellent support from Naman Dhir, who blasted a quickfire 50 off 31 balls as the duo added 122 runs for the third wicket. Despite the strong platform, Mumbai couldn’t fully capitalise in the death overs. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Punjab bowlers with impressive figures of 3 for 22 in his four overs, while Marco Jansen kept things tight, conceding just 30 runs.
Chasing 196, Punjab Kings came out with clear intent and never allowed the asking rate to climb. Openers set an aggressive tone, but it was the middle-order combination of Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer that turned the game decisively in Punjab’s favour.
Prabhsimran remained unbeaten on a superb 80 off 39 balls, bringing up his half-century in just 23 deliveries. Shreyas Iyer complemented him perfectly with a classy 66 off 35 balls. The pair stitched together a match-defining 139-run partnership for the third wicket, batting with remarkable clarity and momentum.
Punjab reached the 100-run mark in just 9.5 overs and cruised past 150 by the 13th over, keeping the required rate well under control throughout. They eventually sealed the victory with seven wickets and plenty of balls to spare, showcasing complete dominance in the chase.
The win marks a significant statement from Punjab Kings, who displayed both firepower and composure against a strong Mumbai Indians bowling attack on a batsman-friendly Wankhede surface.
