At least 20 people were injured, including six critically, after a massive fire broke out at a naphtha-carrying pipeline near the Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) refinery in West Bengal’s Haldia on Tuesday morning.

Emergency response teams rushed to the site and brought the fire under control after several hours. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Six Injured Persons in Critical Condition

According to a senior police officer from East Midnapore district, the fire erupted in the early hours of Tuesday. Of the 20 injured, six sustained critical injuries and are being shifted to a hospital in Kolkata for advanced treatment.

The remaining injured individuals are receiving medical care, while officials continue to monitor the situation.

HPL Says Fire May Be Linked to Suspected Illegal Naphtha Theft Point

In an official statement, Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) said preliminary information suggests the incident may have occurred near an unauthorised naphtha theft point located close to the refinery premises.

The company stressed that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established and remains under investigation in coordination with the relevant authorities.

“It would be too early to comment on the precise cause of the incident. Investigations are currently underway,” the company said.

Company Warns of Risks Associated with Naphtha

HPL highlighted that naphtha is a highly combustible and extremely flammable hydrocarbon, making any unauthorised handling of the petroleum product extremely dangerous.

The company said it has consistently warned nearby communities against illegal access to petroleum pipelines because of the significant safety hazards involved.

Fire Brought Under Control

Officials confirmed that the blaze has now been brought under control, preventing further damage to surrounding facilities.

Emergency teams, including firefighters and refinery personnel, responded quickly to contain the flames and ensure the safety of workers and nearby residents.
