The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially put an end to widespread rumors and anxieties regarding a potential cyclone hitting Odisha.

IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra clarified that the department has not issued any cyclone warning for the state, asking the public not to panic over unverified reports.

Cyclonic Circulation and Low-Pressure Timeline

According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the North Andaman Sea by the evening of September 18. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the East-Central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Andaman Sea by the evening of September 19.

The system is anticipated to intensify gradually while moving in a West-Northwest direction, eventually reaching close to the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts by September 23.

Dr. Mohapatra emphasised that predicting a cyclone before the actual formation of a low-pressure area is scientifically unviable. He cautioned against believing premature forecasts from private agencies or social media rumors, reinforcing that IMD’s tracking models remain world-class and dependable.

Rainfall Forecast and Yellow Warnings

While cyclone fears have been dispelled, heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms are expected across several parts of Odisha over the coming days:

  • High-Risk Districts: Isolated heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h are expected in Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati.
  • Widespread Rain: A Yellow Warning for heavy rain and lightning has been issued for coastal and interior districts including Balasore, Keonjhar, Ganjam, Malkangiri, and Kalahandi.
  • Mid-Week Outlook: Heavy rain is unlikely on Thursday, though 22 districts remain under a lightning alert. By Friday, Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj are likely to experience heavy rainfall.
  • Weekend Forecast: Thunderstorm activities and heavy showers will persist through September 19 and 20.

The Regional Meteorological Centre noted that fishermen are not restricted from venturing into the sea until September 20.
