New Delhi: The Punjab Lok Congress, founded by former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, will merge with the BJP. The decision will be taken after a party meeting on Monday.
Amarinder Singh had formed the party after he was forced by the Congress to resign from the chief minister’s post in September 2021. He was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi.
Later, he announced an alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly election.
The Congress lost heavily in the Punjab polls with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) clinching 92 seats in the 117-member assembly, leaving it with only 18 seats. The AAP sweep decimated other traditional players like the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Captain Amarinder Singh, who also contested the election from the Patiala assembly seat, was defeated by the AAP candidate by a margin of 19,873 votes.
