Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar on Saturday as Sikh groups marked the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army operation carried out in June 1984 to remove armed militants from the shrine.
Members of several hardline Sikh organisations gathered near the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority, where slogans supporting Khalistan were raised. Participants were also seen carrying posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed during Operation Blue Star and remains a controversial figure in Punjab’s political and religious history.
June 6 marks the death anniversary of Bhindranwale, who headed the Damdami Taksal, a prominent Sikh religious institution. The anniversary continues to draw supporters and observers from across Punjab and beyond every year.
Tight Security Blanket Across Amritsar
Anticipating large gatherings and heightened sensitivities around the anniversary, Punjab Police established an extensive security network across Amritsar and nearby areas.
Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha reviewed security arrangements ahead of the event and confirmed that nearly 4,000 police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
According to officials, around 2,000 police personnel and 30 gazetted officers were brought in from outside districts, while another 2,000 officers from the Amritsar district police force were placed on high alert. In addition, five companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were stationed in the city to strengthen security arrangements.
Authorities conducted multiple security reviews and field inspections to ensure peaceful observance of the anniversary.
What Was Operation Blue Star?
Operation Blue Star was launched by the Indian Army in June 1984 under the orders of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The objective was to remove armed militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who had fortified positions inside the Golden Temple complex.
The military operation resulted in significant casualties and damage, sparking widespread debate and criticism across India and abroad. Bhindranwale and several of his followers were killed during the operation.
The events of June 1984 remain one of the most significant and sensitive chapters in modern Indian history, continuing to influence political, religious and social discourse, particularly in Punjab.
Security Agencies Remain Vigilant
Punjab Police officials stated that extensive monitoring and preventive measures were put in place to avoid any disruption during the anniversary events. Security forces maintained a strong presence throughout the day as thousands of devotees and visitors continued to visit the Golden Temple complex.
The anniversary once again highlighted the enduring historical significance of Operation Blue Star and its continuing impact on public discussions surrounding Punjab, Sikh history and national security.
