Can Prashant Kishor Break BJP’s Bankipur Fortress? Jan Suraaj Eyes High-Stakes Bihar Bypoll

Poll strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor has signalled a major political battle in Bihar by announcing that his Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) will contest the upcoming Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Patna, a constituency widely regarded as one of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strongest bastions.

The seat became vacant after senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha and later elevated as the party’s national president earlier this year.

Kishor Calls Bypoll a Referendum on Government Promises

Speaking about the significance of the contest, Kishor described the by-election as more than just a local political battle.

According to him, voters will have an opportunity to assess the promises made by the ruling alliance after the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

“Bankipur has remained a BJP stronghold for decades. This bypoll will allow people to evaluate commitments related to employment, migration, education and economic opportunities,” Kishor said.

He argued that the election would serve as a public verdict on the performance of the current Bihar government led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

Why Bankipur Matters

Bankipur is considered one of the BJP’s safest seats in Bihar.

Nitin Nabin first won the constituency in a 2006 by-election and successfully retained it for multiple terms. In the 2025 Assembly election, he secured a commanding victory with more than 62 percent of the vote share and defeated his nearest rival by nearly 52,000 votes.

The constituency has consistently backed the BJP for around four decades, making it a politically symbolic battleground.

Jan Suraaj Sees Opportunity

Despite failing to win a seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the Jan Suraaj Party remains optimistic about its prospects.

The party contested 238 of Bihar’s 243 seats and secured an overall vote share exceeding three percent. While it did not open its account in the Assembly, Kishor believes the political landscape has changed since then.

He maintained that a strong candidate and focused campaign could make the contest competitive.

“Only Jan Suraaj has the potential to challenge the BJP effectively in Bankipur,” Kishor asserted.

Will Prashant Kishor Contest Himself?

Speculation continues over whether Prashant Kishor will enter electoral politics directly by contesting the bypoll.

When asked about the possibility, Kishor reiterated that the decision would be taken collectively by the party leadership.

The statement mirrors his position before the 2025 Assembly elections, when he chose not to contest despite widespread expectations.

Paper Leak Issue Also Raised

Kishor also commented on the ongoing concerns over examination paper leaks across India.

He described the issue as a systemic challenge rather than an isolated problem and argued that deeper reforms are needed in the education sector.

According to him, improving transparency and reducing excessive dependence on coaching-driven systems are essential to restoring trust among students and families.

A Crucial Political Test Ahead

The Bankipur bypoll is expected to attract statewide attention because of its symbolic importance. For the BJP, retaining the seat would reinforce its dominance in an established stronghold. For Jan Suraaj, a strong performance could provide much-needed momentum and establish the party as a serious challenger in Bihar politics.

As campaigning gathers pace, all eyes will be on whether Prashant Kishor can convert his political strategy into electoral success in one of Bihar’s most closely watched contests
