Priyanka Chaturvedi ‘Predicts’ Nirmala Sitharaman’s Saree Choice for Budget 2026, Call Comes True

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi correctly “predicted” the saree choice of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget 2026–27, a moment that quickly gained attention on social media.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who is presenting her ninth consecutive Union Budget, appeared in Parliament wearing a purple handwoven Kanjeevaram silk saree, a traditional handloom from Tamil Nadu.

Prediction Made a Day Before Budget

Speaking to news agency ANI on January 31, a day before the Budget presentation, Priyanka Chaturvedi said she expected the finance minister to wear a saree from Tamil Nadu.

“I hope the finance minister presents the nation’s budget and not an election-going state budget where we see her presenting the Budget wearing a Tamil Nadu handloom weave, speaking parts of the speech in Bengali, with a policy announcement for tea gardens of Assam,” Chaturvedi had said.

Prediction Shared on Social Media

On Budget day, Chaturvedi took to social media platform X to point out that her prediction had come true.
“Tamil Nadu handloom weave. As predicted,” the Rajya Sabha MP wrote, sharing her reaction to Sitharaman’s attire.

Sitharaman’s Sarees and Handloom Tradition

Nirmala Sitharaman is known for showcasing traditional Indian handloom and textile crafts during her Budget presentations. In previous years, her saree choices have highlighted diverse regional art forms.

  • During Budget 2025–26, she wore an off-white handloom silk saree featuring Madhubani-style fish embroidery

  • In Budget 2024–25, she chose a tussar silk saree with kantha work

This year’s Kanjeevaram silk saree, also known as a Kanchipuram saree, is woven from pure mulberry silk and is known for its rich texture and contrasting borders. These sarees are traditionally produced in the Kanchipuram region of Tamil Nadu.

Political Context

The saree choice drew added attention as Tamil Nadu is set to go to the Assembly polls later this year, making cultural symbolism a subject of political discussion during the Budget session.
