Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has reported the deaths of five crocodiles between January 23 and January 30, 2026.

The incidents have raised serious concerns among wildlife experts and zoo authorities, as the exact cause remains undetermined.

Zoo officials confirmed that post-mortem examinations were conducted on the deceased crocodiles. Veterinary and forensic teams are expected to release detailed reports soon, which will help identify the underlying reasons for the sudden mortality. Meanwhile, the health of the remaining crocodiles in the enclosure is being closely monitored.

Nandankanan Zoo is widely recognised for its conservation breeding programs, particularly for crocodilians such as mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris) and gharials. The park has played a significant role in national efforts to conserve these species, making the recent deaths a setback for ongoing initiatives.

Authorities have assured that precautionary measures are being taken to safeguard the rest of the crocodile population. Wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists are awaiting clarity on whether the deaths were caused by disease, environmental factors, or other issues.
