Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies by the 2029 elections.

In a letter to floor leaders of both Houses, he urged all political parties to support amendments required to enable early implementation.

The appeal comes ahead of a special three-day session of Parliament scheduled from April 16 to 18.

Call for Collective Political Support

The Prime Minister highlighted that inclusive growth is key to national progress. He said that greater participation of women in governance will strengthen democratic institutions and decision-making.

He urged leaders across parties to support the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and ensure its implementation in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Why Amendments Are Necessary

The Women’s Reservation Act, passed in 2023, provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, the rollout is currently linked to the delimitation process based on the 2027 Census.

Under existing provisions, implementation could be delayed until 2034. To advance the timeline to 2029, legislative amendments are required.

Key Features of the Law

  • 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies
  • Increase in Lok Sabha seats after delimitation
  • Around 273 seats expected to be reserved for women
  • Implementation linked to Census and delimitation

Strengthening Inclusive Representation

The Prime Minister noted that women form nearly half of India’s population and are contributing across sectors, including science, sports, business, and public service.

He said increasing women’s representation in politics is essential for balanced and inclusive governance.

A Key Moment for Parliament

Describing the upcoming session as important, Modi said it is an opportunity for leaders to work together and strengthen democratic values.

He expressed confidence that all parties will support the initiative and help deliver a significant reform for the country.
