Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, remembering him as an “extraordinary statesman” whose vision and commitment to public service continue to inspire generations.

Vajpayee, one of India’s most prominent political leaders, died on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93.

In a post on X, Modi said Vajpayee dedicated his life to serving the nation and highlighted his contribution to governance and public welfare.

“Remembering Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi. An extraordinary statesman blessed with remarkable vision, he dedicated his life to the service of our nation,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister added that Vajpayee’s words, efforts and leadership strengthened the country, while his emphasis on good governance and public welfare continued to offer guidance.

Amit Shah remembers Vajpayee’s contribution

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Vajpayee, describing him as a patriot and statesman who devoted his life to the nation.

Shah highlighted Vajpayee’s role in strengthening India’s strategic capabilities, including during the nuclear tests and the Kargil War. He also recalled the former prime minister’s emphasis on Antyodaya and good governance.

Shah said Vajpayee’s leadership and values would continue to inspire BJP workers and contribute to the country’s nation-building efforts.

Rajnath Singh recalls Vajpayee’s legacy

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also remembered Vajpayee on his death anniversary and highlighted his contribution to Indian democracy and national development.

Singh said Vajpayee enriched Indian democracy through his ideas and actions and remained committed to the principle of “Nation First, Always First.”

He also credited Vajpayee’s leadership with helping India make progress in strategic strength, economic development and infrastructure.

Singh said Vajpayee’s ideals, personality and commitment to national service would continue to inspire generations.

Vajpayee served as Prime Minister three times

Vajpayee served as India’s Prime Minister on three occasions.

His first tenure in 1996 lasted 13 days. He returned as Prime Minister in 1998 and served for around 11 months before becoming Prime Minister again in 1999. His third tenure lasted a full five years until 2004.

In 2015, Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
