In the aftermath of the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, including many tourists, the United States has strongly backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed unwavering support for India in its fight against terrorism.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce condemned the attack and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to India. “The United States stands strong with India against terrorism, and Prime Minister Modi has our full support,” she said.
Bruce added that the US is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining high-level diplomatic contact with both India and Pakistan. “Yesterday, the Secretary spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. We are committed to regional stability and peace,” she said, referencing Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent outreach to leaders in New Delhi and Islamabad.
The US has urged both countries to pursue a “responsible resolution” to de-escalate tensions. Bruce reiterated the Biden administration’s call for a peaceful path forward, stating, “We continue to be in touch with the governments of both countries at multiple levels.”
The statement comes amid heightened tensions, with India accusing Pakistan of backing cross-border terrorism. In response to the April 22 attack, India has suspended key diplomatic and logistical engagements with Pakistan, including the Indus Waters Treaty and operations at the Attari Integrated Check Post.
Additionally, the Indian government has granted the armed forces full operational freedom to respond to any further provocation. The Indian Army has already retaliated against Pakistan Army’s unprovoked firing along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Pahalgam attack has drawn global condemnation, with the US emerging as one of India’s most vocal allies in the current crisis.
