Several international cricket boards have reportedly approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to add more One Day International (ODI) matches during India national cricket team tours in 2026.

The requests come ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be hosted in South Africa. According to reports, cricket boards from England, New Zealand, Ireland, and Sri Lanka have expressed interest in scheduling extra ODI games during India’s upcoming tours.

Kohli and Rohit Remain Major Draw in ODI Cricket

A key reason behind the demand is the continued popularity of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both senior players have stepped away from other international formats and now feature primarily in ODI cricket.

Their presence is expected to attract large crowds and boost broadcast revenues during overseas tours. While T20 Internationals usually generate strong commercial interest, ODI matches involving India remain highly lucrative due to the star appeal of Kohli and Rohit.

Ireland Proposes Three-Match Series

Cricket Ireland is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting a three-match series against India during the summer. The matches could take place around India’s white-ball tour of England.

Officials are currently discussing whether the series would consist of ODIs or T20Is, and whether the games would be played in Ireland or at a neutral venue such as Southampton in England.

England and Sri Lanka Series Could See Changes

India’s scheduled tour of England currently includes three ODIs and five T20Is. However, discussions are ongoing about potentially increasing the number of ODIs.

Similarly, Sri Lanka Cricket has reportedly asked the BCCI to include additional white-ball matches when India tour Sri Lanka later in 2026 for a two-Test series.

New Zealand Tour Could Expand

India are also set to tour New Zealand at the end of 2026. The current schedule includes two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is.

However, New Zealand Cricket has requested two additional ODI matches, which could make the tour even more extensive for the Indian team.

Preparation for Future Tournaments

India’s coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, has emphasised the importance of gaining more experience in the ODI format. The team is focusing on strengthening its approach to 50-over cricket following recent challenges in the format.

If approved, the additional matches could provide valuable preparation ahead of the next ODI World Cup cycle while also benefiting host boards through increased ticket sales and broadcasting revenue.
