The much‑admired solo art exhibition “Neo‑Urban Avatar: A Mythopoiesis of the Contemporary Times‑II” by eminent artist Birendra Pani concluded at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi, after a two‑week run from July 1 to 14, 2026.

Organised by IIC in collaboration with Purushottam Public Trust, the exhibition drew large crowds and earned praise from leading art critics and cultural figures.

Renowned personalities including Geeta Kapur, Prof. Parul Dave Mukherji, Prof. Shukla Sawant, Prof. Y. S. Alone, Dr. Alka Pande, Ravi Agarwal, Inder Salim, former diplomat Lalit Mansingh, K. N. Shrivastav, and Dr. K. G. Suresh were among those who admired Pani’s distinctive visual language and thematic depth.

The exhibition featured 80 artworks across five sections, tracing 35 years of Pani’s artistic journey—from the Day Dreaming in Vadodara Series (1997‑2002) to the Neo‑Urban Avatar Series (2024‑2026). His works explore hyper‑urbanism, ecological anxiety, and the erosion of local culture through metaphors such as capsules, hearts, and brains, blending satire, myth, and popular imagery.

In the latest Neo‑Urban Avatar series, Pani reinterprets mythological avatars like Meena, Varaha, and Haladhar within modern urban contexts, using hexagonal motifs to symbolise the concrete jungle. His vibrant, drawing‑based compositions merge Indian aesthetic traditions—Patta Chitra, palm‑leaf drawings, and folk performance art—with globalised visual culture.

Alongside art historian Dr. Rajashree Biswal, Pani continues to promote cultural awareness through their initiative New Bride India, fostering creative dialogue among youth. With 16 solo exhibitions worldwide and participation in over 350 group shows, Pani has received honours from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, South Central Zone Cultural Centre, and Odisha State Lalit Kala Academy.
