The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a yellow warning for nine districts in Odisha, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days.
The weather advisory, valid until the morning of October 2, covers Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj. According to the Met Centre, isolated places across these northern and northeastern districts are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h.
Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohamahanti noted that following this brief wet spell, the weather is expected to turn largely dry across the state starting October 7, with no major weather warnings in place for other districts. The reduction in overall rainfall activity comes as a depression previously active over Myanmar continues to weaken. Currently, no major weather systems are active in the lower atmosphere, leaving most parts of the state with dry and sunny conditions.
Safety Advisories and Precautions
The meteorological department has warned that severe lightning and heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, snapped power lines, uprooted trees, and potential risks to life and property in open spaces.
Residents are strongly advised to:
-
Avoid taking shelter under trees or near electrical wires during thunderstorms.
-
Stay indoors in secure structures and keep mobile phones charged with emergency supplies ready.
-
Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea and to follow local administration and IMD directives closely.
State authorities and district administrations have been urged to maintain precautionary preparedness as weather patterns shift across the region.
