The United Arab Emirates has officially ordered a high-level probe into the dramatic cockpit stabbing and potential crash attempt aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, confirming that authorities will examine any possible connections to terrorist activity.
The flight, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board, suffered a life-threatening emergency when a violent altercation broke out in the cockpit. The aircraft plunged roughly 16,000 feet before the situation was stabilised and diverted safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, aided by the intervention of Indian Captain Smit Machchhar and alert passengers.
In an official statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that UAE Attorney-General Dr Hamad Al Shamsi had ordered a specialised team from the Public Prosecution to investigate the incident. Highlighting that the aircraft is registered under the UAE flag, the ministry stressed that national jurisdiction applies to crimes committed on board, regardless of geographic location.
The investigation will thoroughly review all circumstances, motives, and potential links to prior planning or terrorist intent.
