A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, triggering a spell of intense rainfall across Odisha.
According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, the system is expected to cause widespread rain from August 13 to 17, prompting alerts across multiple districts.
On August 13, strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h are forecasted over the southern Odisha coast, the west-central Bay of Bengal, and the northwest Bay of Bengal. Similar conditions are expected to persist on August 14 and 15, with warnings of thunderstorms and heavy showers.
An orange alert has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri districts, anticipating very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning. Meanwhile, yellow warnings have been declared for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur due to expected heavy rain and thunder.
Moderate rainfall with lightning is likely in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Balangir, and Nuapada districts.
In the last 24 hours, Pattamundai in Kendrapara district recorded the highest rainfall at 7 cm.
Due to rough to very rough sea conditions, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea on August 13, 14, and 15.
