A serious road accident occurred near Acharya Vihar Square when a black Skoda car rammed into an on-duty police patrol van (PCR).
The collision left four people injured, including the Balianta police officer, a constable, and the driver of the van.
Police sources said the Skoda’s front bumper, bonnet, and engine section were completely damaged, with several mechanical parts scattered on the road. The car’s airbags deployed, leaving the woman driver with minor injuries.
Following a complaint by the Balianta officer’s driver, Sahidnagar police seized the Skoda and detained the woman driver for questioning. Investigators are probing whether she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Preliminary investigation suggests overspeeding and negligence as possible causes. The police have registered a case against the driver for hitting the PCR van while it was on duty.
The incident has sparked concerns about traffic safety at busy intersections in Bhubaneswar. Locals have demanded speed breakers on the Jaydev Vihar–Acharya Vihar stretch to prevent similar accidents. Police assured that appropriate legal action will follow once the investigation is complete.
