In a notable development, the state of Odisha recorded 4,189 road accidents caused by overspeeding in 2025, marking a significant decline compared to 7,269 such incidents reported in 2024.
The data was presented in the Assembly by Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, highlighting a positive trend in road safety measures across the state.
Other Key Causes of Road Accidents
The minister further informed that apart from overspeeding, several other factors contributed to road accidents in 2025. A total of 96 accidents were reported due to driving under the influence of alcohol, while 90 incidents were linked to wrong-side driving. Additionally, three accidents occurred as a result of drivers using mobile phones while operating vehicles.
Daily Fatalities Remain a Concern
Despite the reduction in overall accidents, road safety continues to be a serious concern in Odisha. According to provisional data from the Crime Branch, an average of 18 people lose their lives daily in road accidents across the state.
Among these fatalities, the data indicates that on average, two women and one child are among the victims each day. The figures underline the urgent need for sustained efforts in improving road safety and awareness.
Government Emphasizes Road Safety Measures
The state government has been focusing on stricter enforcement of traffic rules, awareness campaigns, and preventive measures to reduce accidents. The decline in overspeeding-related incidents suggests that such initiatives may be yielding results, though further efforts are necessary to address other risk factors.
