In response to severe heatwave conditions, authorities in Odisha have ordered the closure of schools in 11 districts to protect students from extreme weather exposure.
Initially, holidays were declared in nine districts—Sambalpur, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Boudh, and Mayurbhanj—as temperatures surged and weather conditions became increasingly harsh.
The list was later expanded to include Khordha and Deogarh, bringing the total number of affected districts to eleven. As per the latest directive, schools in these districts will remain closed until April 23, subject to further review.
Decision Driven by Student Safety
District Collectors took the decision after assessing the intensity of the heatwave and its potential impact on public health, particularly for school-going children.
Officials stated that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health concerns such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. The temporary closure aims to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
The state government is continuously monitoring weather conditions and will take further decisions based on updated reports from district administrations.
Nityananda Gond, Odisha’s School and Mass Education Minister, had earlier indicated that decisions regarding school closures would be made district-wise, depending on the severity of heat conditions.
He emphasised that student safety remains the top priority, and authorities are prepared to extend holidays or announce summer vacations if extreme temperatures persist.
