The Government of Odisha has announced plans to introduce strict laws against offensive language on social media.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan confirmed that the proposed legislation will target obscene and abusive speech, ensuring accountability for those who misuse online platforms.
The new law, titled the Prevention of Hate Speech and Hate Crime Act, will empower authorities to take strong action against individuals who use vulgar or offensive words on social media. The minister emphasised that abusive language in public spaces will also face restrictions under the proposed framework.
The Law Commission has submitted recommendations to curb the rising misuse of social media. Officials believe that unchecked offensive speech has created a toxic environment, and the government must act decisively to restore civility.
Harichandan stated that social media has increasingly become a platform for indecent behaviour. He stressed the need for corrective measures to protect citizens from harassment and verbal abuse. The law aims to safeguard public discourse and promote responsible communication.
The proposed legislation will include penalties such as fines and imprisonment for offenders. Authorities expect that strict enforcement will deter individuals from using obscene or abusive language online and in public.
