Amid growing concerns over fuel availability and long queues outside petrol pumps across Odisha, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has assured the public that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the state.
IOCL Chief General Manager Kamal Sheel urged people not to panic or hoard fuel, saying adequate stocks are being maintained across Odisha and supply operations remain stable.
IOCL Assures Adequate Fuel Supply Across Odisha
Speaking to the media on Friday, Kamal Sheel clarified that oil companies currently have sufficient reserves of petrol and diesel at supply points connected to the Paradip Refinery through pipeline networks.
“Sufficient stocks are being maintained at all supply locations. There is absolutely no shortage of fuel anywhere in Odisha,” Sheel said.
According to IOCL, fuel depots and marketing supply points currently hold enough stock for 10 to 12 days. District-level reserves are also being maintained to avoid disruption in supply.
Sheel appealed to citizens to continue purchasing fuel normally instead of buying extra quantities out of fear.
“There is no need to panic buy, store fuel at home or fill more than required,” he added.
Panic Buying Pushes Fuel Sales Up by 30%
The reassurance comes after reports of unusually long lines at petrol pumps in several districts of Odisha over the last two days.
IOCL officials revealed that panic buying has caused a sharp rise in fuel demand, with petrol and diesel sales increasing by nearly 30%.
The sudden rush has temporarily affected operations at some fuel stations, though officials stressed that fresh stock is being supplied regularly.
Around 2,800 Petrol Pumps Operating in Odisha
Sheel stated that Odisha has nearly 2,800 retail fuel outlets, most of which are functioning normally.
While a few pumps may temporarily run dry due to local operational reasons, oil companies are closely monitoring the situation district-wise to ensure uninterrupted supply.
“All oil companies including IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, Reliance and Nayara have sufficient stock of petrol and diesel,” he said.
He also mentioned that some depots and storage tanks are temporarily closed for unrelated operational reasons, but the situation remains fully under control.
Public Urged Not to Hoard Fuel
Authorities have requested citizens to avoid unnecessary crowding at fuel stations and refrain from storing extra fuel at home.
Experts warn that panic buying can create artificial shortages and increase pressure on fuel distribution systems even when supplies are adequate.
IOCL officials reiterated that Odisha’s fuel supply chain remains stable and there is no reason for public concern at this stage.
