Authorities in Bhadrak and Jajpur districts have ordered the closure of 518 schools today amid worsening flood conditions.

The Bhadrak Collector suspended academic and non‑academic activities in 205 schools across four blocks — Bhadrak, Tihidi, Dhamnagar and Chandbali. Additionally, 265 Anganwadi Centres in the district will remain closed. Officials cited incessant rainfall, waterlogging, and ongoing restoration work as reasons for the decision.

In Jajpur district, the administration ordered suspension of classes in 313 schools across eight blocks — Bari, Dasarathpur, Binjharpur, Rasulpur, Korei, Dharmasala, Jajpur and Badchana. The directive covers government, government‑aided and private institutions at elementary, secondary and higher secondary levels.

While classes have been halted, the orders specify that school buildings remain open for rescue and rehabilitation purposes, supporting ongoing relief efforts in flood‑affected areas.

Authorities emphasised that the closures are temporary but necessary to prioritise student safety. School officials have also been instructed to sanitise water sources within the premises before resuming activities, to prevent contamination from floodwaters.

Copies of the orders have been circulated to Block Education Officers, Chief District Education Officers, Sub‑Collectors, Tahsildars, BDOs and Urban Local Body executives for immediate compliance.

The closures underscore the disruption caused by floods in Odisha, where education has been put on hold as communities grapple with rising waters and relief operations.
