Odisha’s rich diversity of mangoes took the spotlight at the Zonal Conference held here today, earning glowing appreciation from Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Organised by the Directorate of Horticulture, the exhibition stall presented an impressive collection of both traditional and improved mango varieties developed through farmer efforts and FPOs. Over 35 to 40 distinct cultivars from various districts were on display, ranging from elite Shankar and hybrid varieties to rare local gems.

The star attraction was the striking red-hued Hamilton Sundari from Mayurbhanj, which drew crowds with its vibrant colour and appeal. Equally impressive was the premium Miyazaki mango, known for commanding over ₹1,000 per kg in the market, leaving visitors amazed at its quality and potential.

Other notable displays included Baldev from Keonjhar, Jahangir from Balangir, Belgaja from Dhenkanal, along with popular improved varieties such as Arka Nilachal, Kesari, Arka Punita, Arka Suprabhat, Arka Uday, Ambika, and several others.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, ministers from eastern states, and senior officials visited the stall and expressed delight at the quality and range of Odisha’s mangoes. The minister specially commended the state’s progress in mango cultivation and encouraged further efforts toward value addition and exports.

Officials noted that favourable climate, dedicated farmers, and active Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) have significantly boosted both quantity and quality of mango production in recent years. Odisha is steadily carving a unique identity in the national and international mango market.

A recent milestone — the successful export of Amrapalli mangoes from Dhenkanal to London — has further boosted confidence that Odisha’s mangoes can compete on the global stage.

With continued focus on quality aggregation, modern packaging, and market linkages, the future looks sweet for Odisha’s mango industry.
