Odisha has crossed the 1000 mm mark in monsoon rainfall this year, recording 1006.5 mm between June 1 and August 19, 2026, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

This is 220 mm more than the normal 786.5 mm, placing the state in the ‘excess’ category with a 28% surplus.

Data from the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, shows widespread rainfall across most districts. Fourteen districts reported excess rainfall ranging between 20% and 59% above normal, including Khordha (912.9 mm), Cuttack (1145.1 mm), Puri (945 mm), Mayurbhanj (1174.4 mm), and Sambalpur (1325.6 mm).

Seven districts logged large excess rainfall of 60% or more. Bargarh (1438.7 mm, +72%), Sonepur (1495.1 mm, +80%), and Boudh (1469.9 mm, +106%) led the list, followed by Kendujhar, Dhenkanal, Baleshwar, and Kendrapada.

Meanwhile, five districts recorded normal rainfall within 19% of the long‑term average, including Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada, and Kandhamal. Another five districts reported deficient rainfall, notably Kalahandi (772.9 mm), Malkangiri (707.2 mm), Nabarangpur (631.4 mm), and Gajapati (413.2 mm).

IMD officials attributed the surplus to active monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered widespread showers across the state.
