In a significant move to enhance advanced healthcare and medical education, the Odisha government has created 152 new posts across 10 government medical colleges and hospitals.

The positions — spanning Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Senior Residents — have received the Governor’s approval and will primarily strengthen super-specialty departments.

The new posts cover critical areas including Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, CTVS (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery), Clinical Haematology and Surgical Gastroenterology. The decision was communicated through a letter issued by Aswathy S., Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department.

Key institutions benefiting from this expansion include PGIMER & Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, SLN Medical College & Hospital in Koraput, PRM Medical College & Hospital in Baripada, BB Medical College & Hospital in Balangir, FM Medical College & Hospital in Balasore, MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, VIMSAR in Burla, SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack, PMP Medical College in Talcher, and SJ Medical College & Hospital in Puri.

This development comes at a time when Odisha’s government medical colleges already offer a combined 1,800 MBBS seats, 621 postgraduate seats and 61 super-specialty seats (DM/MCh/DNBSS). Flagship institutions continue to lead in capacity: SCB Medical College, Cuttack, has 250 MBBS, 232 PG and 42 super-specialty seats; VIMSAR Burla offers 200 MBBS and 144 PG seats; while MKCG Berhampur provides 250 MBBS, 159 PG and 9 super-specialty seats.

By filling these specialised faculty and resident positions, the state aims to improve patient care in complex medical fields, support the training of future specialists, and reduce the burden on tertiary centres.
