Odisha marked State-Level Local Self-Government Day with a large public programme at OUAT Krishi Siksha Sadan, where Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated and laid the foundation for 593 urban development projects across 62 cities and towns.
Of the 593 works, 423 projects worth about ₹102 crore were dedicated to the public, while foundation stones were laid for 170 projects estimated at ₹221 crore. The combined outlay stands at nearly ₹323 crore. Officials said the package covers roads, civic amenities and other improvement works meant to strengthen urban local bodies.
The Chief Minister also announced ₹560 crore for the development of 28 newly notified Notified Area Councils (NACs). Each NAC will receive ₹20 crore for roads, housing and other infrastructure. The move is intended to give the newly notified areas a faster start on basic civic works.
Majhi planted a sapling as a symbolic gesture during the programme.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh, Mayor Sulochana Das, Chief Secretary Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary, H&UD, Usha Padhee and Director of Municipal Administration Arindam Dakua were among those present, along with a large gathering of citizens, officials and municipal representatives.
