Student democracy has returned to campuses across Odisha as the long-awaited Students’ Union Elections officially commenced this morning. Polling began at 8:00 AM across 346 colleges and 13 universities, drawing massive enthusiasm from students following an eight-year hiatus in campus polls.
Voting is scheduled to continue until 2:00 PM today, with vote counting and official result declarations set to follow immediately this afternoon. Victorious candidates are slated to take their oaths tomorrow, October 16.
High-Stakes Battles and Massive Turnout
The scale of this year’s democratic exercise is immense, with 866 candidates locked in direct contests for the coveted position of union president alone across various institutions.
- Triangular Fights: High-profile campuses such as Utkal University have witnessed high-voltage political maneuvering and triangular contests among major student wings, including the ABVP, BCJD, and NSUI.
- Administrative Protocols: To maintain discipline and prevent election-related friction, university authorities mandated the vacation of hostels and enforced strict bans on unauthorized campaign posters and banners.
Heavy Security and Policing Measures
Following minor pre-poll tensions and scuffles reported on various campuses earlier in the week, district and state administrations implemented robust security measures.
Senior police officials—including commissioners, range IGs, and local DCPs—have maintained direct supervision over sensitive hubs like Utkal University.
Following high-level directives from DGP Vinaytosh Mishra instructing police forces to take preventive measures, heavy police camps and rapid deployment teams have been stationed to ensure peaceful and transparent voting throughout the day.
