The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red warning for six districts of Odisha on July 26 as a low-pressure system over the Northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy showers at isolated places.
According to the IMD, the system is centred over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal coast, with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 9.4 km above mean sea level. The monsoon trough passing through multiple states is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Odisha.
Red warning districts: Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Kendujhar. Orange warning districts: Baleshwar, Sundaragada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Boudhagada, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada. Yellow warning districts: Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Subarnapur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Ganjam.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are also forecast. The intensity is expected to remain high on July 27 and persist through July 28, before gradually easing from July 29. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
