The 24th National Para Athletics Championship 2026 got off to a spectacular start at the iconic Kalinga Stadium here on Thursday, as top para athletes from across the country converged for an inspiring showcase of talent, grit, and determination.
Host state Odisha made an emphatic statement on Day 1, bagging **two gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals** to top the early medal tally and set a confident tone for the rest of the multi-day event.
Leading the charge was Jayanti Behera, who stormed to gold in the Women’s 100m T47 event with a commanding time of **13.17 seconds**, displaying blistering speed and flawless technique. In the Women’s 100m T12 category, Janaki Oram matched the golden success, clocking **13.81 seconds** in a standout performance that drew loud cheers from the home crowd.
On the field, Ranjit Chanda secured bronze in the Men’s Javelin Throw F46 with a solid throw of **55.55 metres**. Satyanarayan Jena also impressed in the same event, recording **51.49 metres** and finishing among the top competitors.
Adding further sparkle to Odisha’s tally, Kamalakanta Nayak claimed bronze in the Men’s 100m T53 with a time of **20.81 seconds**, while Kabita Prabahue earned silver in the Women’s 100m T13, finishing in **16.05 seconds**.
The Para Sports Association of Odisha hailed the athletes’ remarkable performances, crediting months of rigorous training and unwavering support from the state. “This is just the beginning,” an official noted. “Our para athletes have shown the nation what dedication and talent can achieve on home soil.”
