World Sparrow Day was observed across Odisha on Thursday, raising awareness about the alarming decline in sparrow populations due to rapid urbanisation and changing environmental conditions.

Once a familiar presence in both rural and urban landscapes, sparrows are now gradually disappearing as traditional habitats are replaced by concrete infrastructure and modern development.

Observed annually since 2010, World Sparrow Day aims to highlight the importance of protecting sparrows and preserving biodiversity. Environmentalists, conservationists, and citizens across Odisha emphasised the urgent need to take collective action to safeguard the species.

Growing Concern Over Declining Numbers

Experts note that the steady decline in sparrow populations is linked to habitat loss, reduced food availability, and increasing pollution. The disappearance of green spaces and traditional nesting areas has made survival more difficult for these small birds.

Awareness and Conservation Efforts

Several initiatives are being undertaken across Odisha to support sparrow conservation. These include creating bird-friendly environments, restoring natural habitats, and encouraging community participation.

Awareness campaigns in schools, local communities, and urban areas are helping people understand the importance of protecting sparrows and other small bird species.

Simple Steps Can Make a Big Difference

Environmental experts highlight that small, everyday actions can significantly contribute to sparrow conservation. These include:

  • Installing nesting boxes in homes and public spaces

  • Providing food and clean water for birds

  • Preserving trees and green areas

  • Reducing the use of harmful chemicals and pollutants

Such inclusive and community-driven efforts can help revive sparrow populations across both urban and rural regions.

A Shared Responsibility

World Sparrow Day serves as a reminder that protecting biodiversity is a shared responsibility. By taking simple yet meaningful steps, individuals and communities can play a vital role in ensuring that sparrows continue to thrive for future generations.
