Odisha Air Quality Deteriorates After Diwali Fireworks; AQI Turns Hazardous in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri

Bhubaneswar | October 21, 2025:
The glow of Diwali celebrations dimmed across Odisha as thick smoke from firecrackers blanketed several cities, pushing air quality levels into the hazardous category.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri rose alarmingly, raising health and environmental concerns.

Severe Pollution Clouds the Festive Sky

Residents of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri reported reduced visibility and breathing discomfort due to heavy smoke lingering after Diwali night.

In Bhubaneswar, the AQI crossed 180, while Cuttack recorded 190—both classified as poor and unhealthy.

Puri witnessed the steepest rise, with AQI levels touching 657 at 7 pm and remaining at 595 by 9 pm, indicating extremely hazardous conditions.

Visibility dropped below 200 metres in some areas, making it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to move safely.

Rising Urban Pollution a Growing Concern

The post-Diwali spike has reignited discussions on air quality management in Odisha’s urban centres.

Experts stress the need for stricter law enforcement, improved waste management, and increased public awareness to control pollution during festive seasons.
