The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Khordha District Collector to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) regarding the non-compliance of recommendations made by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on July 6, 2017 concerning irregularities at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).
CWC’s Unaddressed Recommendations
The CWC had earlier recommended the formation of a joint inquiry committee to investigate multiple irregularities at KISS, including:
- Severe overcrowding
- Unclean and unhygienic facilities
- Lack of basic amenities for students
However, despite the passage of several years, these recommendations have reportedly not been implemented, prompting the NHRC’s intervention.
NHRC’s Directive
Taking cognizance of the matter, the NHRC has asked the Khordha Collector to explain the delay and provide a comprehensive report on the actions taken so far. The commission has emphasized the need for ensuring the safety and well-being of students at the institution.
This development has put the district administration under scrutiny, with expectations rising for swift action to address the alleged lapses at KISS.
